Henri Becquerel was a famous French physicist.

He was born in Paris on December 15, 1852. Science ran in his family. His grandfather and his father were both well-known physicists. Even his son became a physicist later on. Becquerel studied many things about light and matter. He eventually became a professor at several important schools. His work changed how we understand the tiny building blocks of our world.

In 1896, Becquerel made a very important discovery. He wanted to see if glowing materials could emit X-rays. He used uranium salts for his experiments.

He layered photographic plates with coins or other small objects. Then he wrapped them in thick black paper. He placed the whole pile in bright sunlight. He thought the sun would make the uranium glow and emit rays. This was his plan to find a connection between light and X-rays.

Something unexpected happened during his experiment. The weather turned dark and cloudy for a few days. Becquerel left his prepared plates inside a dark cabinet. He expected the plates to show almost nothing when he developed them. However, the shadows of the objects were still very clear.

He realized the radiation did not need the sun. The uranium was emitting invisible rays all by itself. This amazing thing is called radioactivity. This discovery happened by chance, which scientists call serendipity.

Becquerel shared this big news with the world in 1896. He published seven different papers about his work that year. His research helped other scientists find new elements. Marie and Pierre Curie later discovered polonium and radium. Becquerel also studied how radiation moves in a magnetic field. He found there were three types of radioactivity. These were negative, positive, and electrically neutral. In 1903, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery.

His work still helps people today. He realized radioactivity could be used for medicine. This led to radiotherapy, which is a way to treat cancer.

We even use his name to measure radioactivity. The SI unit for radioactivity is called the becquerel. You can even find his name in space. There are craters on the Moon and Mars named after him. A small planet is also named Becquerel in his honor.
