It is also a very important ore of zinc. An ore is a rock that contains metal. This mineral can hold up to 54.2% zinc. It also contains hydrogen. People find it in the upper parts of zinc and lead ores.

This mineral forms in a very specific way. It often appears from the oxidation of certain ore bodies. This happens in the upper parts of sphalerite-bearing ores. It forms alongside other minerals. These minerals create something called an iron cap or a gossan. Hemimorphite can take many different shapes. It can look like thick crusts or layers. It can also look like tiny needles or fibers. Sometimes it forms rounded shapes or even fan-shaped clusters.

In the past, people did not know all about this mineral. They used to think it was the same as smithsonite. Both were called calamine back then. Scientists found they were different in the late 1700s. Hemimorphite is the rarer of the two. It got its name from its unusual crystal growth. This is called hemimorph development. It means the ends of the crystals look different. One end is blunt while the other is sharp.

There are many places where you can find hemimorphite. You can find it in the United States. It is in Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania. It is also in the Missouri lead-zinc district. Many other countries have it too. It is in China, Mexico, and Italy. You can find it in England and Thailand. It even grows in parts of North Africa and Siberia.

Some hemimorphite can do something very cool. It can glow under special lights. This is called fluorescence. If you use shortwave ultraviolet light, it glows green. This light has a wavelength of 253.7 nm. If you use longwave UV light, it glows light pink. This makes the mineral look like it is shining. It is a fun way to see the different parts of the stone.
