Calamine is an old name for a type of zinc ore.

For a long time, people used it to make brass. Brass is a strong metal made from copper and zinc. This metal was very useful in the past. People used brass to make wire combs for wool. They also used it to make parts for battery mills.

Understanding these rocks helped people build many things.

To make brass, workers used a special way it works. They heated copper and calamine together in a process called cementation. This heat combined the two materials into a new metal. Later, people found a way to make zinc ingots called spelter. In 1738, a man named William Champion got a patent for this. He could now make spelter on a very large scale.

This made it easier to create brass for many jobs.

For many years, people thought calamine was just one mineral. However, scientists soon found a big secret about these rocks. They discovered that calamine was actually two different minerals. One mineral is called smithsonite, which is zinc carbonate. The other mineral is called hemimorphite, which is a zinc silicate.

They look very similar on the outside. They often have a bubbly or massive shape.

A British chemist named James Smithson helped solve this mystery. In 1803, he was the first person to separate them. This was a big step for the study of minerals. Because of his work, scientists now use the real names. They do not use the word calamine for the rocks anymore. This prevents confusion with a pink liquid called calamine lotion.

That lotion is a mix of zinc oxide and iron oxide.

Many places in the world have had these minerals. Large mines were found near Breinigerberg in Germany. There were also many mines in Shipham near Bristol.

You might even know of calamine from medicine. In 1684, a paper described how the powder works on skin. It can soak up moisture from skin that is sore. This helps the skin feel better when it is irritated.

It is a very interesting part of our world.
