It sits along the borders of Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. The Snake River carved this canyon out of a high plateau. It is the deepest river gorge in North America. It is even deeper than the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

The canyon has many different looks. The top edges have thick forests and high peaks. The bottom of the canyon is a dry desert.

Long ago, volcanoes and lava helped shape the land. A new study says the canyon is young. It may have started only 1.6 million years ago.

Many people have lived or worked here. The Nez Percé tribe were the first known residents. Later, miners looked for gold in the river. Today, people visit for fun. You can go rafting on the rapids. You can also go hiking or camping. Some people use jet boats to see the river. The area is part of a large park for recreation.
