She was the seventh of nine children in her family. Her parents were immigrants from Lebanon. They moved to Detroit, Michigan, when she was four years old. Her father ran a grocery store there. Helen went to Detroit Public Schools and later attended Wayne University. She earned a degree in English in 1942. She decided to become a journalist while she was in high school.

As a reporter, Helen was known for being very blunt. This means she spoke in a direct and forceful way. She often asked very hard questions to presidents and their staff.

During the George W. Bush administration, she asked tough questions about wars. Sometimes her comments made government officials feel upset or offended. She once spoke about the fighting in Lebanon and the people in Palestine. She also wrote many books about her life and her work.

Even in her later years, Helen remained a respected figure. President Barack Obama even showed her kindness on her 89th birthday. He presented her with cupcakes in the White House briefing room.

This showed how much people remembered her long career. She had traveled the globe many times to follow the leaders of the United States. Her life was a long path of seeking the truth through news. She showed that one person can make a big impact through their words.
