He lived during the 1600s. A noble man heard him sing as a boy. This man helped Schütz study music at a grand court.

Schütz traveled to Venice, Italy, to learn from a teacher named Giovanni Gabrieli. He brought new Italian styles back to Germany. He wrote more than 500 pieces of music. Most of his songs were for the church. He wrote many pieces called Passions. These are special songs about important stories.

During a long war called the Thirty Years' War, life changed. Schütz had to write smaller pieces of music. He could not use huge groups of players during that time. This made his music sound very charming. Later in life, his music became simple and plain. He was a master at the organ, too. He influenced many famous makers like Johann Sebastian Bach. Some churches even honor him on July 28. He died in Dresden when he was 87 years old.
