A health club is a special place for physical exercise.

A health club is a dedicated facility designed for physical exercise.
Most clubs feature a main workout area for strength training. This space primarily contains free weights, such as dumbbells and barbells. Users also utilize exercise machines that employ gears, cables, and other mechanical systems to guide movement. Mirrors are frequently placed in these areas. They allow exercisers to monitor their bodies and maintain correct posture. Some gyms focus almost entirely on free weights. These specific locations are sometimes called "iron" gyms, named after the traditional color of weight plates.
Another essential component is the cardio area, which is sometimes called a cardio theatre.
Group exercise classes are a major service for many members.
Boutique fitness studios represent a different style of workout environment. These are independent studios designed to create a sense of fitness community. They focus on specific machines, programs, and instructor styles. Unlike traditional gyms, these classes are often only open to members or those in a trial period. They must follow global fitness trends to attract customers. These trends include high-intensity interval training (HIIT), strength training, and dance. They also focus on the mind-body connection through methods like reformer pilates or barre classes.
Many clubs also provide specialized support through personal trainers.
Membership costs vary based on the level of service provided.
The history of the commercial gymnasium began in the mid-19th century. In 1840, Hippolyte Triat, a French vaudevillian strongman, established the first commercial gymnasium in Brussels. In 1847, he opened Gymnase Triat in Paris. He was a pioneer in introducing membership fees for men, women, and children. Later, in 1947, Vic Tanny opened the first health clubs for the general public in Santa Monica, California. In the 1950s, Ray Wilson and Bob Delmonteque founded American Health Studios. They were pioneers in adding saunas and steam rooms to the gym experience. Since the 1970s, the market has continued to expand alongside changing societal trends.
