A man named Rudolph Hass found this fruit. He was a mail carrier in California. In 1926, he planted three seeds. One seed grew into a strong tree. This tree grew odd, bumpy fruit. Rudolph's children liked the taste of it. He sold the extra fruit to his co-workers. Later, chefs bought the fruit for a high price.

Today, the Hass avocado is a big success. It is the most popular kind in the world. It has a long shelf life. This means it stays good for a long time. It also grows many fruits each year. In the United States, it makes up 80% of the crop. Most trees come from one single mother tree. That tree lived for 76 years. It grew in a place with sun and cool winds. These things help the fruit grow well.
