Haskell is a special way to talk to computers.

It is a general-purpose programming language. This means people can use it for many different jobs. It is a purely functional language. In this way of working, functions usually have no side effects. A side effect is when a task changes something else by mistake. Haskell keeps things neat to help avoid these errors.

It is used in both schools and big businesses.

Haskell works using some very smart ideas. It uses lazy evaluation. This is a way of working where the computer waits to do a task until it is truly needed. This can save power and time. It also uses type classes. These are sets of rules that help the computer understand different kinds of data. Haskell uses something called a monad to handle tasks like errors. A monad is a framework that helps the computer manage different kinds of math problems.

Many people helped create this language. A group of experts met in 1987 in Portland, Oregon. They wanted to make an open standard for functional languages. They wanted to bring different ideas together into one common language. They named it after a logician named Haskell Curry. The first version, called Haskell 1.0, was defined in 1990. Later, they made a stable version called Haskell 98 in 1997.

There are many important facts about how Haskell is used today. The main tool to run it is the Glasgow Haskell Compiler, or GHC. GHC is the most common way to use the language. It can run on many different types of computer parts. There are more than 5,400 extra tools and libraries available on a site called Hackage. These tools help people do even more with their code. In 2010, the group released a new standard called Haskell 2010.

You can think of Haskell like a very organized set of math rules. Just as math follows strict steps, Haskell follows strict rules to stay neat. This helps programmers write code that is very reliable. Even though it is a special language, it connects to other ways of talking to computers. For example, it can use a tool called a foreign function interface. This lets Haskell work together with other languages like C. It is a powerful way to solve hard problems with math.
