He founded the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. This company became one of the first global manufacturers of automobile tires. His work helped shape the early automotive industry. Firestone was born in 1868 in Columbiana, Ohio. He grew up on a farm built by his grandfather. His family name originally came from the German word for flint or firestone. An ancestor named Nicholas Feuerstein immigrated from Alsace in 1752. He settled in Pennsylvania.

Firestone's professional career began with a focus on rubber. He first worked for the Columbus Buggy Company in Columbus, Ohio. In 1890, he started his own business making rubber tires for carriages. This was a time when carriages were a primary way to travel. In 1900, he founded the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. This move helped transition his business toward the growing automobile market. In 1926, he published a book titled Men and Rubber: The Story of Business. He wrote this book in collaboration with Samuel Crowther. It detailed his experiences in the industry.

One of Firestone's most significant business moves involved Liberia. He orchestrated a deal to lease over 1 million acres of land. This land was used to establish a massive rubber plantation. It became the largest rubber plantation in the world. The plantation occupied more than 10% of the fertile land in Liberia. The lease agreement was set to last for 99 years. To support this, a company town named Harbel was created. The town was named after Harvey and his wife, Idabelle.

Life on the Liberian plantation was difficult for the workers. The plantation was sometimes compared to an old Southern plantation by company executives. Workers were often poorly paid. They lived in small, one-room dwellings with their wives and children. These homes lacked electricity, running water, and kitchens. Instead, families relied on outhouses and communal kitchens. Because of labor shortages, the wives and children of workers were often employed as well. A joint investigation by ProPublica and PBS looked into these operations. While the League of Nations found no evidence that Firestone consciously used forced labor, the government had forced indigenous villagers to work on the plantation.

Firestone's company worked to manage its public reputation regarding these operations. His son, Harvey S. Firestone Jr., led a public relations campaign. The company aimed to portray itself as a provider of healthcare and jobs. They claimed to offer financial betterment to the region. However, the company also aided Liberian government officials in owning their own plantations. This included the country's former dictator, William V.S. Tubman. Firestone maintained close ties with Tubman during his time in power.

Firestone was part of a famous group of industrial leaders. He, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison often traveled and vacationed together. They called themselves "The Vagabonds." This group sometimes included naturalist John Burroughs. They were also joined occasionally by U.S. Presidents like Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover.

Firestone died of coronary thrombosis at the age of 69. He passed away at Harbel Villa, a beachfront estate in Miami Beach, Florida.

His legacy remains visible in many institutions today. The Firestone Library at Princeton University is named in his honor. It is one of the largest university libraries in the world. In 1974, he was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2013. Several landmarks bear his name, including Firestone High School in Akron, Ohio. There is also a Harvey S. Firestone Park in his birthplace of Columbiana.
