He was born in 1868 in Columbiana, Ohio. He grew up on a farm built by his grandfather. His family name originally came from the German word for flint. An ancestor named Nicholas Feuerstein moved from Alsace to Pennsylvania in 1752. Harvey later married Idabelle Smith in 1895. They had seven children together. His family tree even connects to the famous Henry Ford.

Firestone worked hard to build his career. He first worked for the Columbus Buggy Company in Ohio. In 1890, he started his own business making rubber tires for carriages. Later, in 1900, he founded the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. This company became a global maker of tires for cars. He even wrote a book about his life in 1926. It was called Men and Rubber: The Story of Business. He wrote it with a man named Samuel Crowther.

Firestone also worked on a very large project in Liberia. He made a deal to lease over 1 million acres of land. This was to start a rubber plantation. It was the largest in the entire world. The plantation took up more than 10% of the country's fertile land. This deal was meant to last for 99 years. A town called Harbel was built for this work. It was named after Harvey and his wife, Idabelle.

Life on the plantation was very difficult for many people. Workers lived in small, one-room houses with their families. These homes did not have electricity or running water. There were no kitchens inside the houses. Instead, people used outhouses and shared kitchens to eat. Many workers were paid very little money. Sometimes the wives and children worked too because there were not enough workers. The company tried to show a better image by providing healthcare and jobs.

Firestone died in Florida at the age of 69. Many places today honor his name. The Firestone Library at Princeton University is one of the largest in the world. There is also a Firestone High School in Akron, Ohio. He was even put into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1974.
