Some people call it the "doctor wind." They say it feels invigorating compared to humid air. This season is different from a normal winter. It brings very dry air and lots of dust.

This wind works in a specific way. High pressure stays over the central Sahara desert. Meanwhile, low pressure stays over the Gulf of Guinea. This setup causes the wind to blow across the land. As it moves over the Sahara, it picks up dust. It also picks up tiny sand particles. These particles are between 0.5 and 10 micrometres.

The wind carries this dust into West Africa. This process creates the dusty air we see.

People have studied this wind for a long time. A writer named Knox wrote about it in 1919. He noted that the wind comes from the northeast. He said it can be hot in some places. In other places, it can be quite cold. The weather depends on local circumstances.

The wind mostly blows during the months with the lowest sun. This is the dry season for the region. It is a very important part of the yearly cycle.

There are many facts about this weather. The humidity can drop below 5 percent. This makes the air very dry and desiccating. This dryness can cause tree branches to die. The haze can even block the sun for days. This is like a heavy fog. It can cost airlines millions of dollars each year.

This happens because planes must cancel or divert flights. Dust storms can also happen during this time.

The Harmattan affects how people feel every day. The dry air can cause chapped lips and skin. It can also dry out your eyes. Some people might even get nosebleeds. A 2024 study looked at the dust's effects. It found that the dust can harm young children. The wind can also make asthma feel worse.
