A monsoon is a seasonal change in wind patterns. These winds bring big changes in rain and weather.

Scientists now use the term to describe how air moves around the planet. This movement is linked to a zone called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ. This zone moves north and south of the equator every year.

While people often think of monsoons as just rainy seasons, they actually have a dry phase too. There are several major systems in our world. These include the West African, Asian–Australian, North American, and South American monsoons.

To understand how it works, we must look at heat. Land and water absorb heat in different ways. Water has a high heat capacity, which means it stays at a steady temperature. Land, like dirt and rock, has a low heat capacity. This means land heats up and cools down very quickly.

During summer, the sun warms the land faster than the ocean. This warm land makes the air rise. As the air rises, it creates an area of low pressure. Moist air then blows from the ocean to the land to fill that space. This moist air rises, cools, and turns into heavy rain.

History shows us that these winds have changed over millions of years. The Asian monsoon grew stronger after the Indian subcontinent hit Asia. This happened about 50 million years ago and lifted the Tibetan Plateau.

Some geologists believe the monsoon became strong around 8 million years ago. Other studies of plant fossils suggest it began 15 to 20 million years ago. The strength of the monsoon has changed with global climate cycles. It was even different during the Pleistocene ice ages.

There are many specific facts about these weather patterns. The South Asian Monsoon strengthened about 5 million years ago. During ice periods, the sea level fell and the Indonesian Seaway closed. This kept cold water from the Pacific out of the Indian Ocean. The warmer Indian Ocean then made the monsoons more intense.

In the Middle Holocene, about 6,000 years ago, the East Asian monsoon was very strong. This happened because the Sahara was more green and had less dust. By 5,000 to 4,500 years ago, the East Asian monsoon began to weaken.

Monsoons connect to many things we see every day. You might see heavy clouds or sudden storms during a rainy season.

These winds are like a giant version of a sea breeze. A sea breeze happens when wind blows from the ocean to the land. The monsoon is just a much larger version of that same idea.

It moves moisture across entire continents to help plants grow. Without these seasonal winds, the weather in many parts of the world would be very different.
