Hanya Holm was a famous dancer and teacher. She helped start a new way of moving called modern dance. People call her one of the "Big Four" founders of this art. She was born in Germany in 1893. Later, she moved to New York City to start a dance school.

Holm had a special way of teaching. She did not want her students to just copy her. She wanted them to find their own style. She taught them to use their whole bodies. Her lessons focused on how the back and torso move. She also taught them to use the space around them. Students learned through discovery and play. This helped them find their own inner feelings through dance.

Holm also made dances for big shows on Broadway. She worked on famous musicals like "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot." She was even the first person to put dance on TV. Her work for the show "Kiss Me, Kate" was very important. It was the first dance to be protected by a law called copyright. She worked hard her whole life. She believed that hard work helps you reach great goals.
