The Hanseatic League was a large group of towns.

It started in the late 12th century. German traders wanted to trade goods more safely. They also wanted to stop robbers.

At first, it was just small groups of traders. Later, it grew into a huge network. It included nearly 200 towns. These towns were in eight different countries. The group controlled trade in the North and Baltic Seas. They moved things like timber, wax, and furs.

The League had special trading posts called Kontors. These were in places like London and Bergen. One famous post in London was called the Steelyard.

The League was very strong. It could even wage war to protect its trade.

But the League was not one single country. It did not have its own army or money. It was a loose group of cities. Over time, the group began to fall apart. By 1669, the League had ended. Many cities joined other lands instead.
