This title reflects his status as one of the most brilliant commanders in history. He was famous for his tactical mastery and strategic intellect. Han Xin never lost a single engagement that he commanded. His innovative use of deception and battlefield psychology set new standards for military art. Before his rise to power, Han Xin lived a life of extreme poverty in Huaiyin. He was unable to find work as a merchant or a government official. This destitution meant he often relied on others for his daily meals. One famous story tells of an old woman who fed him for twelve days.

Han Xin later repaid her with 1,000 taels of gold once he became successful. Another story describes a moment of great public humiliation. A young man challenged Han Xin to crawl between his legs to prove he was a coward.

Han Xin chose to endure the shame to preserve his life for future greatness. Years later, he actually appointed that same man to a position of authority to show his long-term vision.

In 209 BCE, Han Xin joined the rebel army of Xiang Liang to overthrow the Qin dynasty. After Xiang Liang died, he served Xiang Yu, a powerful leader. However, Xiang Yu did not value Han Xin's talents. Han Xin suggested many strategies, but they were ignored. In 206 BCE, he decided to leave Xiang Yu's service. He chose instead to join the army of Liu Bang. This decision changed the course of Chinese history. At first, Liu Bang did not give him an important role. He was even nearly executed for violating military law.

Two important men helped Han Xin rise through the ranks. First, a general named Xiahou Ying recognized his talent and recommended him to Liu Bang. Second, the Chancellor Xiao He became his greatest supporter. When Han Xin deserted the army because he felt undervalued, Xiao He chased him to bring him back. This event is known as "Xiao He chasing Han Xin under the moonlight." Because of Xiao He's persistence, Liu Bang promoted Han Xin to Commander-in-Chief. This was the highest rank in the military. A formal ceremony was held to mark this massive promotion.

Han Xin used brilliant deception to expand the Han territory. One of his most famous tactics was called "appearing to repair the gallery roads while making secret advances through Chencang." He ordered soldiers to pretend to fix roads in one area to distract the enemy. While the enemy watched the repairs, he sent a secret army through a hidden path. This surprise attack allowed him to conquer the Three Qins region. This strategy was so effective that it became part of the Thirty-Six Stratagems. His victories were essential in the fight against the Western Chu kingdom led by Xiang Yu.

As the wars progressed, Han Xin's power grew immensely. In 203 BCE, Liu Bang named him the King of Qi. The following year, he was named the King of Chu. However, this growing influence caused tension with Liu Bang. The emperor began to fear Han Xin's ability to control large armies. In late 202 BCE, Han Xin was demoted to the rank of Marquis of Huaiyin. His military command was revoked, and he was moved away from the center of power. The political landscape was shifting as the new dynasty began to stabilize.

Ultimately, Han Xin's life ended in tragedy in early 196 BCE. He was accused of participating in a rebellion. This accusation led to a trap set by the imperial court. On the orders of Empress Lü, Han Xin was executed in the Hall of Zhong at Changle Palace. The punishment also included the extermination of his three clans. Despite this violent end, his legacy as a military genius remains. A stone monument in Huaiyin commemorates him as a national hero. His life connects the era of warring states to the organized stability of the Han dynasty.
