Hadji Ali was a famous performer on the vaudeville stage.

He was known for a special skill called a regurgitation act. This means he could swallow objects and bring them back up. People called him many names like "The Human Volcano." He was also known as "The Human Aquarium." He was likely born in Egypt around 1888 or 1892. As a young boy, he discovered his talent while swimming in the Nile River. He found he could swallow large amounts of water and spout it out.

Ali had many different tricks to show his audience. He could swallow 60 to 100 glasses of water at one time. He would then spout the water in a long stream for a minute. He also swallowed 30 to 50 unshelled hazelnuts. He could bring them up one by one in a specific order. Sometimes he swallowed colorful handkerchiefs or even live goldfish. He could even swallow smoke from lit cigarettes to look like a volcano. He even swallowed strange things like coins, stones, and pool balls.

His most famous trick was his big finale. He would drink a lot of water and then drink a pint of kerosene. Kerosene is a type of fuel that burns easily. He would then act like a human flamethrower. He would spray the liquid onto a metal model of a house to start a fire. After the kerosene was gone, he would spray the water to put the fire out. He acted as both a fire starter and a fire extinguisher. To prove he was not using tricks, he let audience members watch him closely.

Ali traveled all over the world to perform. Around 1914, he performed for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. The Tsar even gave him a special decoration for his show. In the mid-1920s, Ali moved to the United States. He traveled with his daughter, Almina, who helped him as an interpreter. They performed at fairs, carnivals, and vaudeville theaters. He sometimes earned as much as $1,000 in a single week.

Many famous people admired his unique skills. The singer Judy Garland said he was her favorite performer. The magician David Blaine also called him his favorite magician of all time. Even doctors were puzzled by how his body worked. They studied him to see if he used any secret tricks. Some people even tried to use X-rays to understand his stomach. Ali died in England on November 5, 1937, from heart failure. His amazing life is still remembered by fans of magic and vaudeville today.
