Many people think he was the greatest magician of the 20th Century. He was known for being very funny and clever. Instead of acting like a serious scientist, he used wit and humor. This style made his stage shows very exciting for audiences. He was a master of grand illusions and platform magic. People loved his engaging way of presenting tricks.

Devant had many famous tricks that people still talk about. In one routine, he used an empty hat to pull out many eggs. An assistant from the crowd tried to count them all. It was so confusing that Queen Alexandra reportedly laughed out loud. He also performed the "Mascot Moth" trick. In this act, a winged assistant would vanish in an instant. He even had a "Magic Kettle" that could make any drink requested by the audience.

His career began in London during the late 1800s.

He was born David Wighton in Holloway. By 1893, he was already a star in music halls. He later became a partner with John Nevil Maskelyne. Together, they ran the famous House of Magic at St George's Hall. This place was like a headquarters for the art of magic. It showed the best magicians from all over the world.

Devant was also a pioneer in the early world of movies. In March 1896, he showed the first films ever seen in the UK. He used a machine called a Theatrograph to show these Edison films. He worked closely with Georges Méliès, a famous film maker. Devant even sold films and cameras for Méliès in Great Britain. He appeared in several early films himself. He was a very important part of how cinema began in London.

Today, many magicians still honor the work of David Devant. He was the first President of The Magic Circle. This famous group even named a room after him in London. They give out the David Devant Award to great magicians. This award is a small statue, or bust, of Devant. He believed magic should be done "all by kindness." He lived in Hampstead, where a blue plaque marks his old home.
