Dai Vernon was a world-famous magician from Canada. Many people called him "The Professor" because of his great skill. He was a master of sleight of hand. This means he used very quick and clever hand movements. He was especially famous for card tricks and close-up magic. Other magicians respected him deeply because he was a wonderful mentor.

Vernon learned his magic through careful study and practice. He often looked for card cheats to learn their secrets. He wanted to see how they used tricks to win. He also studied a famous book called "The Expert at the Card Table." By age 13, he had memorized the whole book. He even used these skills to impress other young magicians.

His journey began in Ottawa, Canada, in 1894. He learned his first trick from his father at age seven. His father was a government worker and an amateur magician. Later, Vernon studied mechanical engineering in Kingston, Ontario. He eventually moved to New York City to find more magicians. He even changed his name to Vernon to avoid mistakes.

One famous story involves the great magician Harry Houdini. Houdini thought he could solve any card trick quickly. Vernon showed him a trick called the "Ambitious Card." He performed it many times for the famous man. Even Houdini could not figure out the secret. Vernon used this story in his advertisements for years.

Vernon spent his final decades at the Magic Castle. This is a special nightclub in Hollywood, California. He lived and worked there starting in 1963. He taught many famous magicians like Doug Henning and Ricky Jay. He worked at the club until he was 96. He passed away in 1992 in California.
