Dai Vernon was a famous magician from Canada. People called him "The Professor" because he knew so much. He was a master of sleight of hand. This means he used quick, clever hand moves to do magic. He was very good at card tricks.

One famous story says he fooled Harry Houdini. Houdini was a very great magician. Vernon showed him a card trick many times. Even Houdini could not figure it out! Vernon used this story to help people know his name.

To learn new tricks, Vernon looked for card cheats. He wanted to see how they used tricks to win. He also made money by cutting silhouettes. These are small art pictures made from shadows. This work helped him support his family.

Later in life, Vernon lived at the Magic Castle. This is a special club in Hollywood. He spent his time teaching other magicians there. He helped many people learn the art of magic. He worked there until he was 96 years old.
