He was one of the greatest virtuoso pianists of the twentieth century. A virtuoso is a musician with incredible skill. People loved to hear him play difficult pieces. He was famous for his amazing speed and talent. He could take a song and make it his own. This is called an arrangement or a paraphrase. He made many of these for the piano. He often played songs by famous composers like Chopin.

Cziffra learned to play in a very special way. He did not start with sheet music. Instead, he watched his older sister practice the piano. She worked a job to buy an upright piano for the home. Young György would watch her and mimic her moves. He learned by listening to the tunes his parents sang. He would repeat those tunes and improvise. Improvising means making up music as you play. Later, he earned money playing at a local circus.

His life began in Budapest in 1921. He was born into a poor Romani family of musicians. His father, Gyula, was a cabaret artist who played the cimbalom. Because the family had little money, his mother and sister earned the income. Cziffra began formal studies at the Steinitz Music School in 1930. In 1932, he passed an exam for the Franz Liszt Academy. He studied there under teachers like Imre Keéri-Szántó. He later claimed to study with Ernő Dohnányi as well.

Cziffra faced many hard times during the wars. He was a prisoner of war after being captured by Russian partisans. He also spent time in a labor camp from 1950 to 1953. During that time, he had to carry 130 pounds of concrete. This heavy work damaged the ligaments in his wrists. Because of this, he often wore a large leather wristband. He moved to Vienna in 1956 to escape Hungary. He then moved to France and became a French citizen in 1968.
