He was born in Budapest in 1921. He grew up in a poor Romani family. His sister worked hard to buy an upright piano. Young György watched her practice. He learned to play by ear. He did not use sheet music. Instead, he played tunes his parents sang.

He played music at a local circus. Later, he became a great jazz pianist. He also studied at the Franz Liszt Academy. Cziffra was known for his skill. He could play very fast and difficult songs. He made new versions of songs by composers like Chopin. One of his famous pieces is "Flight of the Bumblebee."

His life was not always easy. He spent time as a prisoner of war. He also worked in a labor camp. This work hurt his wrists. He wore a large leather wristband to help him play. Later, he moved to France. He started a foundation to help young musicians. He wanted to support artists starting their careers. He died in France at age 72.
