They are known for a loud and energetic sound. This sound mixed styles like punk, blues, and metal. This helped change the way rock music sounded in the late 1980s. Many people call them "The World's Most Dangerous Band." They are one of the best-selling musical acts in history. Their records have sold over 100 million copies around the world.

Making their music was often a long and hard job. For their first big album, the singer Axl Rose recorded one line at a time. This took a much longer time than the other parts. They also worked hard to find the right producer. They eventually chose Mike Clink to help them. In later years, they made an album called Chinese Democracy.

This album cost about $14 million to make. It became the most expensive rock album ever produced.

The band started in Los Angeles, California, in 1985.

It grew from two older groups called L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. The "classic" lineup included Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, and Steven Adler. In their early days, they even hitchhiked with only their guitars. They lived together in a place called "The Hell House." They played many shows in small clubs in Hollywood. This helped them gain fans before they became famous.

Their first album was Appetite for Destruction, released in 1987.

At first, the album did not sell many copies. Everything changed when the "Welcome to the Jungle" video played on MTV. The album eventually sold over 30 million copies worldwide. This made it the best-selling debut album in the United States. They also had huge hits like "Sweet Child o' Mine." This song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Many things have changed for the band over the years. Members left and new musicians joined the group many times. In 2016, Slash and Duff McKagan joined the band again.

This led to the Not in This Lifetime... Tour. This tour was one of the highest-earning tours ever. In 2012, the band joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Today, the band still performs for fans all over the world.
