People often split the area into two parts. Lower Guinea is near the coast. It is one of the most crowded places in Africa. It includes parts of Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana. Upper Guinea is further inland. It stretches from Côte d'Ivoire to Senegal. This part has fewer people living there.

Long ago, many traders came to this land. They wanted to trade gold, ivory, and pepper. Some parts even had names like the Gold Coast. This trade made the region very wealthy. Many small kingdoms grew in the area. These kingdoms were strong and stayed together. Because of this, it was hard for others to take over the land. Most of the area was not ruled by others until the end of the 1800s.
