The Sahel is a large region in Africa.

It sits in a belt across North Africa. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. The Sahel is a transition zone. To its north is the dry Sahara desert. To its south are the green Sudanian savannas.

The land is mostly flat. Many acacia trees grow there. These trees can live with very little water.

Most of the area is covered in grass. During the long dry season, many trees lose their leaves.

The weather is hot and sunny.

It does not rain all year. There is a long dry season and a short rainy season. Most rain falls in the middle of the year.

Many animals live in the Sahel. You might see herders with their livestock.

Some animals, like the lion and cheetah, are now rare. Many birds also stop here when they fly.

Sometimes the Sahel faces hard times. Long droughts can make it difficult to find food and water. People work on projects like the Great Green Wall to help the land.
