The Gold Coast was a place in West Africa.

It sat on the Gulf of Guinea. The name came from the gold found there. The land also had oil and gas.

The Gold Coast was east of the Ivory Coast. It was west of the Slave Coast.

Many groups came to the area to trade. The Portuguese were the first to arrive in 1482. Later, the Dutch, Swedes, and Danes also had parts of the land. By 1871, the British held all of the Gold Coast. They used the land to get its riches. They did not move many people there to live.

In the late 1800s, the British took more land further inland. This happened after the Anglo-Ashanti wars. In 1957, the land became a free nation. It was made of four different parts. These parts joined together to become Ghana. The name Ghana was chosen for the people living there.
