His life took place during the transition into the Three Kingdoms period. This was a time of significant political shifts and intense warfare. Guan Yu was known for both his martial strength and his intellect. He was a studious man who could fluently recite lines from the Zuo zhuan, an ancient history book. In military terms, his prowess was described as being an "enemy of ten-thousand."

While he was kind to his soldiers, he often lacked courtesy toward the gentry. This combination of scholarly interest and combat skill made him a unique leader. He joined a volunteer militia to help suppress the Yellow Turban Rebellion in the 180s. This early experience helped shape his career as a rising military figure.

A defining moment in Guan Yu's career involved his relationship with the warlord Cao Cao. In 200, Guan Yu was captured by Cao Cao's forces after Liu Bei was defeated. Cao Cao treated Guan Yu with immense respect and offered him many honors. He even had the Emperor appoint Guan Yu as a Lieutenant-General.

Despite these favors, Guan Yu remained committed to his oath to Liu Bei. He famously decided to repay Cao Cao's kindness through military action. At the Battle of Boma, Guan Yu charged the enemy and slew the general Yan Liang. This act lifted the siege and allowed Guan Yu to depart honorably to find Liu Bei.

Following his time with Cao Cao, Guan Yu played a vital role in the struggle for territory. In 208, he participated in the famous Battle of Red Cliffs. This battle was a turning point where Liu Bei allied with Sun Quan to defeat Cao Cao. After the battle, Liu Bei gained more control over southern territories. Guan Yu was tasked with governing and defending the strategic Jing Province. He held this position for approximately seven years, providing stability to the region. His leadership in Jing Province was essential to the survival of the Shu Han state.

Guan Yu's life ended during a period of intense political betrayal. In 219, while he was fighting Cao Cao's forces at the Battle of Fancheng, the Sun-Liu alliance collapsed. Sun Quan's forces, led by the general Lü Meng, moved to conquer Jing Province. Guan Yu was defeated at Fancheng and subsequently captured in an ambush. He was executed at Linju in the Xiangyang Commandery.

His death marked the end of a major military leader, but it began his journey toward becoming a legend.

Because of his perceived moral qualities, Guan Yu became a deified figure. During the Sui dynasty, his achievements were glorified to the point of worship. The 14th-century historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, further emphasized his deeds.

He is traditionally shown with a "peerless beard" and wearing a green robe over his armor. His signature weapon was the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, a heavy glaive weighing about 49 kilograms.

Today, the influence of Guan Yu extends far beyond ancient history. He is worshipped in Chinese folk religion, Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism.
