He carries a specialized weapon called the Sanjian Liangren Qiang. This is a three-pointed, two-edged spear that can cleave through steel and stone as if they were wool.

Beyond his physical weapons, Erlang possesses immense magical capabilities. He is often said to master the 72 Earthly Transformations. This skill allows him to change his shape into almost anything. He also uses a technique called Jiuzhuan Xuangong, which makes him nearly invincible against most magic and conventional weapons.

The origins of Erlang are complex and combine history with legend. Many believe he is the deification of Li Erlang. Li Erlang was the second son of Li Bing, a hydraulic engineer during the Qin dynasty (221–206 BC).

Li Bing is famous for building irrigation systems to prevent the Min River from flooding. Legend says Li Erlang helped his father by capturing a local river dragon. This act helped protect the Chengdu Plain from destruction. Because of this, local people honored the father and son as gods.

In other traditions, Erlang is identified as Yang Jian. These stories describe him as the nephew of the Jade Emperor. According to these legends, his mother was Princess Yunhua. She was the sister of the Jade Emperor but was imprisoned for marrying a mortal man.

To rescue her, Yang Jian became a disciple of the teacher Yuding Zhenren. He studied at Jinxia Cave to learn fighting and magic. By age seventeen, he had gained enough power to split Mount Tao and free his mother.

Erlang appears in many famous literary works. In the Ming-era novel *Investiture of the Gods*, he helps the Zhou army defeat the Shang. In the classic *Journey to the West*, he is a powerful figure who becomes an ally to Sun Wukong.

These stories have helped spread his reputation across China. During the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127 CE), his worship spread from his local roots in Sichuan to the rest of the country.

Throughout history, various Chinese emperors have bestowed special titles upon him. Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty gave him the title Shenyong Dajiangjun. Later, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty elevated his status even further. The Emperor Zhenzong of the Northern Song dynasty also provided him with official titles. These honors show how significant he remained to the state and the people over many centuries.

Erlang Shen connects several different parts of Chinese culture. He links historical engineering feats to divine myth. He also connects the idea of filial piety—the duty to care for parents—to the heavens. In some beliefs, he even enters the underworld to save his mother. This makes him a figure of both incredible strength and deep family devotion.
