Its job is to find and study secrets from around the world. This helps the Russian military make plans. Unlike other groups, the GRU reports to military leaders. They also have their own special troops called Spetsnaz.

The group has a very old history. Some parts began in 1810. In 1942, the group took its current name. During the Cold War, they used spies in many countries. Some spies worked at embassies. Others worked without any official cover.

After the Soviet Union ended in 1991, the GRU stayed strong. It was the only group to keep working mostly the same way. In 2006, they moved to a new, big headquarters. The building cost 9.5 billion rubles to build. Today, the GRU has many different teams. One team watches Europe. Another team watches Asia. A third team watches Africa and the Middle East.
