Grouper

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Groupers are a diverse group of marine fish. They belong to the family Epinephelidae. These fish live in many parts of the ocean. Some people call them by many different names. In the Philippines, people call them lapu-lapu or pugapo. In Indonesia and Malaysia, they are known as kerapu. In the Middle East, they are called 'hammour'.

These fish are very important to people around the world. Many are used as food or caught for sport.

Most groupers have a stout body and a large mouth. They are not built for fast or long swimming. Instead, they use a clever way to hunt. Their mouths and gills create a powerful vacuum. This vacuum pulls prey in from a distance. They do not bite pieces off their food. Instead, they swallow their prey whole. They eat fish, octopuses, and crustaceans.

They even use their mouths to dig in the sand. This helps them make shelters under big rocks.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. The family name Epinephelidae comes from the genus Epinephelus. This name comes from an ancient Greek word. It means "clouded over." This refers to a cloudy membrane on their eyes. Many species were described by scientists in the 1800s. For example, the genus Anyperodon was named in 1859. The genus Epinephelus was named in 1793.

Groupers can grow to be quite huge. The Atlantic goliath grouper can be over a meter long. This fish has been weighed at very large amounts. Some groupers also have a special way of growing. They are mostly protogynous hermaphrodites. This means they start life as females. After they reach a certain size, they can change sex. They might become males once they are large enough.

Some groupers grow about one kilogram every year.

You might see groupers in many places today. Some people keep small species in aquariums. However, even small groupers grow very fast. In many markets, groupers are sold alive. This is different from many other fish that are frozen. Some people also enjoy sea-angling to catch them.

You might even hear about them in the news. For example, a grouper once swallowed a shark in an aquarium. They are truly amazing creatures of the sea.
