It sits on the banks of the Neman River. The city is positioned near the borders of Poland and Lithuania. Today, it serves as the administrative center for the Grodno Region and Grodno District. The current population of the city is 363,718 people.

It is a significant cultural hub for Belarusians, Poles, and a small Jewish community.

The origins of Grodno are tied to its role as a defensive and commercial site. The city likely began as a small fortress and a trading outpost. The official foundation year is recorded as 1128. The name Grodno may come from the Slavic verb "gorodit," meaning to enclose or fence.

This name suggests the city's early purpose was to protect a specific area. Early records from the Kievan Chronicle show the city sat at the crossing of many trade routes. In 1183, a massive thunderstorm caused a lightning strike that burned the entire city. This event destroyed all the stone churches that existed at that time.

During the 13th century, Grodno became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The local stronghold was rebuilt by Lithuanian rulers during this period. The city faced many military challenges from various groups. The Teutonic Knights attacked the city repeatedly between 1283 and 1402. These attacks often resulted in the burning of the castle and the taking of prisoners. In 1389, the Grand Dukes allowed the creation of a Jewish commune. This was one of the first Jewish communities within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1441, the city received a formal charter based on the Magdeburg Law.

Grodno reached a peak of political importance during the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the 1580s, it served as the de facto capital of the Commonwealth. King Stephen Báthory moved his main residence and military headquarters to the city. He rebuilt the Old Grodno Castle into a grand royal residence.

He also built the Renaissance Batorówka Palace to expand the royal grounds. The city was a place where important political meetings, called Sejms, were held. The very last Sejm of the Commonwealth took place here in 1793. This era established Grodno as a major center for European trade and culture.

The late 18th and 19th centuries brought significant political changes. In 1795, Russia annexed the city following the Third Partition of Poland. The last Polish king, Stanisław August Poniatowski, abdicated in the New Castle that year. Under the Russian Empire, Grodno became the seat of the Grodno Governorate in 1801. The city saw industrial growth led by figures like Antoni Tyzenhaus. During the 19th century, the city had a very large Jewish population. An 1897 census showed that Jews made up 22,700 people, or about 48% of the total population.

The 20th century was marked by shifting borders and intense conflict. After World War I, Grodno was briefly linked to the Belarusian People's Republic and the Republic of Lithuania. It was eventually taken over by Poland. During World War II, the city experienced occupation by the Soviet Union and later by Nazi Germany.

The city's Jewish community was heavily impacted by the Holocaust. Following the end of the war in 1945, Grodno became part of Belarus. This transition helped define the modern borders of the region.

Today, Grodno is known for its diverse heritage and historical architecture. Visitors can see the Old Grodno Castle and various religious sites.

The city remains a center for Roman Catholicism and Polish culture within Belarus. It is a place where many different historical influences meet. The architecture reflects its long history as a royal residence and a trading hub. From its beginnings as a small Slavic fortress to its role as a regional capital, Grodno remains a vital part of the landscape.
