You might know them as the North American brown bear. These large animals are part of a bigger group called the brown bear. There are many different types of these bears around the world. Some live in places like Siberia or Japan. In North America, we call them grizzlies. They are very important to the wild places where they live.

Adult grizzlies have a large muscular hump on their shoulders. Their faces have a "dished in" look, which means they curve inward. They also have short, rounded ears and a rump that is lower than their shoulders. Their claws are long and help them with digging.

Their fur color can change from blond to almost black. Often, their hair has white or blond tips on their backs. This gives them a special look.

Scientists have studied how these bears changed over a long time.

Long ago, brown bears lived in Eurasia. They moved to North America between 177,000 and 111,000 years ago. Some bears moved south when an ice-free path opened up. In the 1800s, people thought there were 86 different species of grizzly. By 1953, scientists realized there was only one species. Now we know the grizzly is a subspecies of the brown bear.

About 30,000 of these bears live in Alaska. This is the largest group of grizzlies in North America. Many others live in Canada, with most in British Columbia. In the United States, about 1,000 live in Montana. Another 1,000 live in the Yellowstone area. Some bears used to live in California, but those are now extinct. The last California grizzlies died in the early 1920s.

Grizzly bears have a very interesting way of living through the seasons.

They hibernate for five to seven months each year. This means they sleep for a long time to save energy. During this sleep, mother bears give birth to their cubs. The tiny cubs drink milk from their mothers to get strong.

This helps them grow before the warm weather returns.
