His influence grew even larger in 1915 when the Emperor left to lead the army during the First World War. During this time, Rasputin and the Empress held much power.

However, many people in Russia did not like Rasputin's influence. As the Russian military faced defeats in the war, the imperial family became unpopular. In 1916, a group of noblemen decided to kill him.

Rasputin visited the St. Nicholas Monastery at Verkhoturye. There, he met a starets, or spiritual elder, named Makary. This encounter led to a profound spiritual transformation. Rasputin became a strannik, which is a holy wanderer or pilgrim. He spent many years traveling to various holy sites. During this time, he lived as a vegetarian and stopped drinking alcohol. He held secret prayer meetings with followers in his father's root cellar. These meetings sometimes drew suspicion from local villagers and the church.

He arrived in the city between 1903 and 1905. He met several religious leaders who helped him enter high society. Archimandrite Theofan became a very important friend to him. Theofan introduced Rasputin to the influential salons of the Russian aristocracy. At this time, many wealthy people were curious about the occult. They were interested in spiritualism and theosophy. Rasputin's unique background and mannerisms made him a subject of intense curiosity. By 1905, he had formed friendships with the "Black Princesses," Militsa and Anastasia of Montenegro. These women helped introduce him to the Tsar.

In November 1905, Rasputin met Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna.

The imperial family soon believed he possessed miraculous healing powers. Their only son, Alexei Nikolaevich, suffered from haemophilia. This is a condition where a person's blood does not clot properly. This caused the young prince to suffer from internal bleeding and pain. The Empress became convinced that Rasputin could stop these episodes through prayer. In the spring of 1907, Rasputin was called to pray for Alexei during a hemorrhage. The boy recovered the next morning. This event solidified Rasputin's role as an indispensable member of the royal entourage.

Rasputin's power reached its peak in 1915. During this year, Nicholas II left Saint Petersburg to oversee the army. The Tsar was leading the Russian forces during the First World War. In his absence, Rasputin and Alexandra consolidated their influence over the empire. However, this period was also marked by many Russian military defeats on the Eastern Front. These losses made the imperial couple increasingly unpopular with the public. Many people blamed Rasputin for the problems facing the government.

In 1916, a group of conservative Russian noblemen decided to act. They opposed Rasputin's influence over the imperial family. They planned to assassinate him to protect the monarchy.

The assassination took place in the early morning hours. Historians suggest that Rasputin's scandalous reputation helped discredit the Tsarist government. His death may have helped precipitate the overthrow of the House of Romanov. Shortly after his death, the imperial rule came to an end. Today, Rasputin remains a mysterious figure in popular culture.
