Much of Blavatsky's early life is difficult for biographers to verify. She often provided contradictory accounts of her own past. Many of her early writings from before 1873 have not survived. In 1849, she claimed to begin a long period of world travel. She said she visited Europe, the Americas, and India.

She claimed to have met "Masters of the Ancient Wisdom" in Shigatse, Tibet. These masters allegedly trained her in spiritual and scientific synthesis. However, many critics argue these travels were fictitious. They suggest she actually spent that time in Europe. This makes the period between 1849 and 1869 a blend of myth and reality.

In 1873, Blavatsky moved to the United States. There, she became involved in the Spiritualist movement. She defended the existence of spiritual phenomena but disagreed with mainstream views. She did not believe these phenomena involved the spirits of the dead. In 1875, she co-founded the Theosophical Society in New York City. She worked alongside Henry Steel Olcott and William Quan Judge.

In 1877, she published her major work, *Isis Unveiled*. This book outlined her Theosophical worldview. She connected her ideas to Hermeticism and Neoplatonism. These are ancient philosophical and esoteric traditions.

In 1880, Blavatsky and Olcott moved to India. They attempted to form an alliance with the Arya Samaj. This was a Hindu reform movement. However, they faced opposition from leaders like Maharishi Dayananda. In 1882, Blavatsky and Olcott became the first Americans to formally convert to Buddhism.

The Theosophical Society spread quickly in India despite British colonial opposition. However, the movement faced internal crises. Blavatsky was accused of using fraudulent methods to produce paranormal events. These accusations caused significant problems for the Society.

As her health declined, Blavatsky returned to Europe in 1885.

She established the Blavatsky Lodge in London. During this time, she published several influential books. These included *The Secret Doctrine*, which she claimed was a commentary on ancient Tibetan manuscripts. She also wrote *The Key to Theosophy* and *The Voice of the Silence*. She continued her work until her death from influenza in 1891.
