Ariosophy refers to a set of esoteric ideological systems developed in Austria between 1890 and 1930.
Armanism, the system developed by List, functioned through two distinct levels of instruction. The first level was the exoteric doctrine, which he called Wotanism. This was intended for the lower social classes and took the form of popular myths. The second level was the esoteric doctrine, known as Armanism. This was a secret form of gnosis reserved only for an initiated elite. List believed in a group of priest-kings called the Armanenschaft. He claimed these leaders were the heirs of a sun-king. This structure allowed the movement to maintain secret knowledge while sharing stories with the public. List argued that ancient customs were often hidden under a Christian veneer.
The theological framework of Armanism was described as gnostic, pantheist, and deist. At its heart was a mystical union between God, humanity, and nature. List rejected the idea of a strict divide between spirit and matter. Instead, he taught that God dwells within the human spirit and within the laws of nature. This included the cycles of growth, decay, and renewal. He believed the human ego was a separate agent necessary for God's work. Through successive reincarnations, the individual would eventually overcome obstacles. List combined the cyclical time of Norse mythology with a linear view of history. This created a vision of an ultimate future utopia, which he identified as Valhalla.
Guido von List's journey into these ideas began around 1899 or 1900. In April 1903, he submitted a manuscript to the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna. This paper proposed a "monumental pseudoscience" regarding ancient German faith and language. Although the academy rejected his article, List continued to expand his theories. He published a major work in 1914 titled "The Proto-Language of the Aryo-Germanics and their Mystery Language." Before his focus on the occult, List was a writer of historical novels and plays. He also wrote for German Nationalist newspapers in Austria. Over time, his work became a cornerstone of the occult counterculture in Central Europe.
