He also won the Road World Championship twice. These wins showed the world that he was a truly great athlete. He even became the first professional cyclist to sign a million-dollar contract.

Cycling helped Greg find his focus when he was a young boy. He grew up in the ranch country of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

As a child, Greg had ADHD, which made it hard for him to sit still. He found that riding a bike helped clear the fog from his brain. He started racing in 1976 and was very successful right away. He even won his first 11 races. By age 18, he was the youngest person ever chosen for the U.S. Olympic cycling team.

LeMond's career was full of both great wins and very hard moments. In 1986, he became the first non-European pro to win the Tour de France.

However, a serious accident happened while he was hunting in 1987. He was accidentally shot with pellets and suffered serious injuries. He had to undergo two surgeries and missed two years of racing. Many people wondered if he could ever race at the top again. He proved them wrong with an improbable comeback in 1989.
