The Greenland ice sheet is a massive layer of ice.

It covers about 80% of the island of Greenland. This ice sheet is the second largest in the world. It forms through a set of steps called glaciation. First, snow falls and piles up each year. The weight of the new snow squashes the layers below. Over hundreds of years, this snow turns into solid ice.

The ice is so heavy that it slowly flows. It can flow around mountains or through gaps in the coast. Some of this ice breaks off into the sea. This is called ice calving.

Today, the ice sheet is changing fast. It is the warmest it has been in 1,000 years. This happens because of global warming. The ice is melting much faster than it used to. Since 1996, new snow has not kept up with the melt. This melting adds water to the ocean. This causes the global sea level to rise. Scientists use ice cores to study the past. An ice core is a long tube of ice. These tubes hold tiny bubbles of old air. They help us learn about the Earth's history.
