These islands are part of the West Indies. They are located in the Caribbean region of the Americas. The group includes Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. It also includes the Cayman Islands and Navassa Island. These islands make up nearly 90% of the land in the West Indies. Most of the people living in the West Indies live here too.

History changed these islands many times. Christopher Columbus was the first European to reach them. He sailed south from the Bahamas to find them. The Spanish began to build permanent settlements on Cuba and Hispaniola. Later, France had influence over Haiti. The British also invaded Jamaica. In 1804, Haiti became the first independent black-led republic in the Americas.

This was a very important moment in history. The Dominican Republic later gained its independence from Haiti in 1844.

Today, many different people live across these islands. About 38 million people live in the Greater Antilles. This is 6% of all people in Latin America. Santo Domingo is the largest city in the group. Havana, Port-au-Prince, Kingston, and San Juan are also large cities.

People speak many different languages here. Spanish is used in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. English is the main language in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. In Haiti, people speak French and Haitian Creole.

The islands were formed by the movement of the Earth. The Caribbean plate moves near other plates. This movement can create islands through volcanism. It can also scrape rock onto the North American plate.
