Long ago, ancient coral reefs grew in the ocean. The reefs formed a layer called Key Largo Limestone. Over time, the sea level changed during ice ages. This caused the reefs to be exposed as land. Some islands are made of sand around these old reefs. Other parts are made of Miami Limestone.
