It stretches a very long way across the Earth. The valley starts in the plains of northern Syria. It runs south through the Red Sea. Finally, it ends far away in Mozambique.

Scientists use different names for this area. Geologists often call it the Afro-Arabian Rift System. This name describes the deep structures in the ground. It is a place that many people study. They look at the land, the animals, and even old bones.

This landscape was made by moving parts of the Earth. These parts are called plates. In the north, the Arabian plate and the African plate move past each other. This movement creates deep basins like the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is very low. In fact, it sits below sea level.

The Red Sea also helps link the two continents. It is a narrow sea with a very deep middle. The deepest part there reaches 2,860 meters. This movement of the ground is what shapes the valleys.

People first began to understand this place a long time ago. An Austrian geologist named Eduard Suess first thought about it. He believed there was a linked set of features from Syria to Mozambique. Later, a British geologist named John Walter Gregory used the name Great Rift Valley in 1896.

He helped make the name famous. Today, we use his name to talk about these amazing valleys. It is a way to describe a very big part of our world.

In Africa, the valley splits into two main paths.

The first path is the western Albertine Rift. This area has very deep, fresh water lakes. Lake Tanganyika is the second deepest in the world. The second path is the eastern Gregory Rift. This path has many volcanoes and lakes. Some of these lakes, like Lake Natron, are salty. High mountains like Mount Kilimanjaro stand near these rifts.

The valley is also a very busy path for animals. Many birds use the Great Rift Valley to travel. This is called a flyway. Large birds like the White Stork use it. You might also see a Great White Pelican soaring above.
