The water flows out through the Great Bear River. This river eventually flows into the much larger Mackenzie River.

The lake has a very interesting shape and look. It has many long parts called arms that reach into the water. These include the Smith Arm and the Dease Arm. There are also the McTavish, McVicar, and Keith Arms.

The water is famous for being very clear. In 1828, an explorer named John Franklin tested this clarity. He dropped a white rag into the water. He could not see the rag until it was very deep.

History and nature have shaped this land for a long time. The lake was once part of a giant glacial lake called Lake McConnell. Long ago, ice shaped the valleys we see today. The lake sits between two areas called the Canadian Shield and the Interior Plains.

From late November until July, the lake is covered in ice. People use ice roads to travel during the winter. In 2016, a fuel truck fell through the ice near Délı̨nę. This shows how hard it can be to move things in the cold.

The lake is deeply important to the people who live there. The Dene people call themselves the Sahtu after this lake. To them, the lake is like a beating heart for humanity.
