He was known as one of the greatest batsmen to ever play the game. Many experts believe he was a true champion. The famous player Sir Don Bradman even called him one of the best left-handed batsmen ever. Pollock belonged to a famous cricketing family. His father, Andrew, was a former first-class cricketer too. Even as a young boy, Graeme showed amazing talent on the field. He once hit a six into a nearby cemetery at age nine!

Playing cricket involves using a bat to hit a ball. Pollock was a master at this difficult skill. He used his wrists and great timing to score many runs. In 1963, at age 19, he became the youngest South African to score a Test century. A Test century means a player scores 100 runs in one game. He also became the youngest South African to score a double-century in first-class cricket. This means he scored 200 runs in a single match. His batting was often described as beautiful and powerful.

Pollock's career began in the early 1940s in Durban.

He grew up in a Scottish family in the Natal Province. He went to Grey High School, which was a famous sporting school. At age 16, he played for Eastern Province. By the 1962–63 season, he was scoring huge amounts of runs. He even scored 209 runs not out in a special match. This was a very high score against professional bowlers. His talent earned him many awards during his early years.

Many numbers show how great he was. His batting average in Test matches was 60.97. This is the third best average in history. Only Sir Don Bradman and Adam Voges have higher averages. In 1966, he was named one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year. Later, in 2007, he was named the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for 1967 and 1969. He also joined the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009. These honors prove he was one of the very best.

Sadly, Pollock could not play many international games. His career was cut short at age 26. This happened because of a sporting boycott against South Africa. Other countries stopped playing with South Africa due to the government's apartheid policy. This was a very hard time for South African cricketers. Pollock still played in many unofficial matches against other teams. He continued to play cricket until he was 42 years old. Even during these hard years, he remained a great player. He scored many more centuries in those unofficial games.
