He was a famous batsman who played for the national team for many years. A batsman is a player who hits the ball with a wooden bat. Border was also a part-time left-arm orthodox spinner. This means he could throw the ball with a spinning motion. He was a very important leader for his country. He served as the captain of the Australian team for a long time. His leadership helped his team win the 1987 Cricket World Cup.

This was the very first time Australia won that major world title.

Border was known for his incredible skill and his stubbornness on the field. He was very hard to get out of a game. In one famous match in 1981, he played with a fractured left finger. Even with this injury, he scored a century. A century means a player has scored 100 runs in a single turn. He once played for more than 15 hours to score 313 runs. This showed how much grit he had during difficult matches. He often used his feet to move toward the ball to handle spinners. This helped him succeed when his teammates were struggling to cope.

His journey began in the suburb of Cremorne in Sydney.
