A graduated cylinder is a helpful tool used in science labs. It is used to measure the volume of a liquid. Volume is the amount of space a liquid takes up.

These tools are often called measuring cylinders or mixing cylinders. They are usually tall and narrow. This shape helps make measurements more exact and precise. Most cylinders have a base to stand on and a spout for pouring.

Using the cylinder is a careful process. You must look at the liquid at eye level. The surface of the liquid often curves. This curve is called a meniscus. This happens because liquid is attracted to the walls of the cylinder. Molecular forces pull the liquid toward the sides. This creates a concave shape that dips in the middle. You should always read the measurement at the bottom of this curve.

People have used these tools for a long time. Louis Bernard Guyton de Morveau first introduced the graduated cylinder in 1784. He created it for use in volumetric analysis. This is a way to study the volume of substances. Today, we have many different kinds of cylinders. Some are wide and low. Mixing cylinders even have ground glass joints. These allow them to connect to other parts or use a stopper.

There are many facts about how these tools are made. Capacities usually range from 10 mL to 1000 mL. Large cylinders are often made of polypropylene. This plastic is good because it resists chemicals. Some are made of polymethylpentene to stay clear and light. You might see marks like "TC" or "TD" on them. These mean "to contain" or "to deliver." There are also two levels of accuracy called Class A and Class B. Class A is twice as accurate as Class B.

Graduated cylinders are more precise than beakers or flasks. However, they are not the most accurate tools for volumetric analysis. Scientists use volumetric flasks or pipettes for even better precision. You can also use a cylinder to find the volume of a solid. You do this by measuring how much liquid the solid moves out of the way. This is called displacement. It is a lot like how a toy in a bathtub makes the water rise.
