A graduated cylinder is a tool used in science labs. It helps people measure the volume of a liquid. Volume is how much space a liquid takes up.

These tools come in many sizes. They can hold from 10 mL to 1000 mL. Most are tall and narrow. This shape helps make measurements more exact. They often have a base to stand on. They also have a spout for easy pouring. Some are made of glass. Others are made of plastic called polypropylene. This plastic is strong against chemicals.

To get a good reading, you must look at eye level. The liquid surface often curves. This curve is called a meniscus. Liquid is attracted to the walls of the cylinder. This force makes the surface bend. You should read the measurement at the bottom of the curve.

There are two types of accuracy. Class A cylinders are very precise. They are twice as accurate as Class B. You might see marks like "TC" or "TD." These show if the tool is meant to contain liquid or deliver it.
