China has a unique way of running its country. The Chinese Communist Party, or CCP, is the main group in charge.

The government works through a system called people's congresses. This means the CCP sets policies and then the government carries them out. There is no separation of powers in this system. Instead, there is only one main branch of government. This branch is represented by the legislature, which is a group that makes laws. All parts of the state must answer to the National People's Congress.

This makes the system a unitary communist state.

The National People's Congress, or NPC, is the highest power in China.

It is the largest parliamentary body in the whole world. In 2023, it had 2,977 members. These delegates are elected for five-year terms. The NPC meets every year in March for about two weeks. They meet in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. During these meetings, they review and approve major plans for the nation. When the full NPC is not meeting, a smaller group called the Standing Committee does the daily work. This committee makes most laws and explains the constitution.

Leadership in China is very organized and follows a strict rank.

The most important person is often called the paramount leader. Currently, Xi Jinping holds this role. He holds three major offices at once. He is the General Secretary of the CCP, the President of China, and the Chairman of the Central Military Commission. The presidency is mostly a ceremonial job used to represent China to other countries. Since the 1990s, the person who leads the CCP has also been the President. The top decision-making group is called the Politburo Standing Committee. In 2024, this group has seven members.

There are many different groups that help run the country.

The State Council is the executive part of the government. It is led by a person called the Premier. The State Council includes many ministers and different agencies. They are responsible for making sure the laws are followed. There are also judicial organs like the Supreme People's Court.

These courts are not independent because they are part of the political system. They answer to the NPC. In 2018, a new group called the National Supervisory Commission was made. This group looks for corruption within the government and the party.

China's rules have changed many times over the years.

The first constitution was created on September 20, 1954. Later, a version in 1975 was much shorter and used many slogans. The current constitution was declared on December 4, 1982. This is the fourth version of the rules for the country. The CCP's role as the leader is written directly into this constitution. This means the party has authority over the military, the government, and even schools. The party and the state are very closely linked together. This connection has grown even stronger under the leadership of Xi Jinping.
