The Golden Globes are prestigious annual awards honoring excellence in international film and television. Held typically every January, the ceremony serves as a cornerstone of the entertainment industry's awards season. This season eventually leads to the Academy Awards. To qualify for a nomination, works must meet specific criteria during a calendar year. This eligibility period runs from January 1 through December 31. Films must be at least 70 minutes long and have a seven-day run in the Greater Los Angeles area. Television programs must air in the United States during prime time hours. They can be on broadcast, cable, or digital platforms, but reality shows are disqualified.

The awards have evolved through various organizational structures and trophy designs. Originally, the ceremonies were organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The HFPA was formed from the merger of two groups in 1955. These were the Hollywood Foreign Correspondent Association (HFCA) and the Foreign Press Association of Hollywood (FPAH). In 2023, the Golden Globes underwent a major restructuring. The awards were acquired by Dick Clark Productions under the ownership of Eldridge Industries. This transition turned the awards into a for-profit entity. Meanwhile, the HFPA's former philanthropic work moved to a new non-profit called the Golden Globe Foundation.

Historically, the awards featured unique honors like the Henrietta Awards. These were established by the FPAH and named after its president, Henry Gris. The physical design of these awards changed several times. Early versions featured an angel above a globe on tall pillars. Another version was a large statuette of a woman holding a flower. These were often determined by international polls of newspapers and radio stations. By 1955, the HFPA merged the groups and replaced the Henrietta name. They introduced a new version of the World Film Favorite award. This new trophy featured a Golden Globe surmounted by an angel.

Special honorary awards recognize lifetime achievements within the entertainment industry. The Cecil B. DeMille Award was established in 1950 to honor outstanding contributions. The first recipient of this honor was director and producer Cecil B. DeMille. In 2019, the organization created a television counterpart called the Carol Burnett Award. This was named after the first recipient, actress and comedian Carol Burnett. The ceremony also features the Golden Globe Ambassador. This role was formerly known as "Miss Golden Globe." Traditionally, these ambassadors were the children of famous celebrities. This position was a point of pride for many celebrity families.

The categories of the Golden Globes have expanded as media technology changes. In 1956, the 13th ceremony introduced the first award for Television Achievement. By 1962, permanent categories like Best TV Series and Best TV Actor were established. The trophies themselves have also seen significant updates. In 2009, the Society Awards firm helped redesign the Golden Globe statuette. This new version included a unique marble base and increased gold content. More recently, the awards recognized the growth of digital audio. In 2026, a new category for Best Podcast was added. The first winner of this category was Amy Poehler for her show, "Good Hang with Amy Poehler."

The organization has faced significant challenges and periods of transition. In 2021, the HFPA faced criticism regarding a lack of diversity in its membership. This led to boycotts from major companies like Netflix and Amazon Studios. Some actors, such as Tom Cruise, even returned their previously won awards in solidarity. Because of these issues, the 79th ceremony in 2022 was a non-televised, private event. It followed strict COVID-19 protocols due to the Omicron variant. This period of unrest eventually led to the acquisition by Dick Clark Productions. This change aimed to modernize the ceremony and increase voter diversity.

Beyond the glitz of the ceremony, the awards support important charitable causes. Revenue from the broadcasts has funded millions of dollars in donations. These funds support scholarships and programs for future industry professionals. A major beneficiary is the Young Artist Awards. This program was established in 1978 by HFPA member Maureen Dragone. It recognizes excellence in performers under the age of 21. The foundation also provides scholarships for artists facing physical or financial challenges. Through these efforts, the Golden Globes connect the success of stars to the support of new talent.
