You can set a deadline to finish a goal. Some goals are short-term. These take a little time. Other goals are long-term. These take a long time.

Two researchers, Edwin A. Locke and Gary P. Latham, studied goals. They found that hard goals help people do better. This is true if the person has the right skills. It is also true if they get feedback on their work.

Before you start, you must pick a goal. Then you must make a plan. This is called the planning phase. A goal can be simple or complex. A complex goal has many small parts. For example, finishing college is a big goal. It has many small steps like getting good grades.

Goals can also help you feel happy. If a goal has personal meaning, it can bring joy. This is called a self-concordant goal. These goals match who you really are. Reaching them can make life feel good.
