Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases.

These diseases can damage the optic nerve. The optic nerve sends sight info to your brain. If not treated, glaucoma can cause vision loss.

Inside the eye, a liquid called aqueous humor helps it keep its shape. This liquid gives nutrients to the eye. It must drain out through a part called the trabecular meshwork. In open-angle glaucoma, this drainage is slow. The liquid builds up and pressure goes up. This can happen very slowly. People call it the "silent thief of sight."

In closed-angle glaucoma, the drainage is blocked suddenly. This causes a fast rise in pressure. It can cause eye pain or blurry vision.

High pressure can hurt the nerve. This may happen because of the pressure itself. It might also happen if blood flow to the nerve goes down. Doctors can use eye drops, lasers, or surgery to help. These treatments aim to lower eye pressure. Regular eye tests are very important. They help find the disease early. This can help stop vision loss.
