Later in his life, he lived in the port of Dieppe in France. He worked as a navigator and sailed many different seas. He even traveled to the eastern Mediterranean during his early career.

In 1523, King Francis I of France gave Verrazzano a big job. The king wanted him to find a new path to the Pacific Ocean. This was a very important goal for French merchants. A group of wealthy families helped pay for the trip. They raised over 20,000 écus to fund the mission. Verrazzano even used his own money as an investor.

He was also the captain of the ships.

The journey to North America was very difficult. Verrazzano started with four ships to sail west. A violent storm hit the fleet early on. Two of the ships were lost in the rough seas. The other two ships, La Dauphine and La Normande, had to return home for repairs. After they were fixed, the ships set sail again in 1524. They traveled south to find calmer waters. Verrazzano finally reached the North American coast in March 1524.

Verrazzano saw many amazing places along the Atlantic coast. He was the first European to explore the area between Florida and New Brunswick. He sailed into New York Bay and saw the entrance to the Hudson River. He also visited Narragansett Bay and saw Cape Cod.

Along the way, he met Native Americans like the Lenape and the Wampanoag. He named the new land Francesca to honor the French king. He also explored parts of modern Maine and Nova Scotia.

Verrazzano's life ended during his third voyage in 1528. He was exploring near the island of Guadeloupe when he died. Some stories say the Carib people killed him. For a long time, many people forgot about his great travels. This happened because other explorers became more famous. Later, people worked hard to remember his name.
